Lucky, born in South Australia in 1882, was fascinated with trains for unknown reasons. Before being captured by a dog catcher, he lived out his early years as a stray, following railroad employees to their jobs. He appeared to be going to the pound, but fortunately for Lucky, a compassionate station guard who liked him purchased him. It turned out fine since his new owner permitted him to travel to work every day in the guard’s van. But later, Luky’s master moved on because of a promotion, and they lost touch. Lucky then started jumping trains by himself.
Lucky toured Southern Australia, becoming a well-known and welcoming sight on trains all around the region. When Lucky desired some solitude, he would occasionally pick an empty carriage and use his loud barking to frighten off any would-be passengers. He was left alone by the station managers and guards since they all recognised him by name. He went home with the engine driver that evening for a hot dinner and a comfortable place to sleep, and the following day he boarded the train again. Lucky travelled at will for most of his life, and as his renown increased, so did the response he received when riding into town.
He was given a unique bracelet with his name on it with an inscription requesting that he be allowed to go anywhere he pleased. When local children saw him going on trains, they raced after him as if he were the Pope. He was also permitted to attend banquets as a guest of honour. Lucky was the most famous dog in Australian history when he passed away after living a brief but eventful life. Lucky was taken back to his town where he was born and given full barlial with honours in central park and a head stone that says, Lucky The Train Masters Fathful Companion. 1882 – 1895
