You’re prepared for a home movie night after you’ve sat down in your favourite chair. Your pooch comes, leans on your legs, and sits on your feet before you can say, “Pass the popcorn.” This act has a historical background; aristocratic women formerly employed several tiny breeds as foot warmers. Why does your dog use you as a canine sofa when there are plenty of dog cushions all over the floor?
Why Do Pooches Sit on Their Owners?
For various reasons, dogs lean on their owners’ legs and sit on their feet. But dogs regularly perch on their owners because of love, security needs, nervousness, or a desire to protect them. Because they don’t have to stoop down to sit, dogs with arthritis may also choose this elevated position.
Pooches frequently sit on our feet because they want to be near us, according to Dr Mary Burch, Ph.D., an applied animal behaviourist who is also the head of the AKC’s Family Dog Program. “It’s one way a dog expresses love.” Consider your pooch lying down at your feet as the pooch equivalent of a hug or embrace. Puppies and adult pooches of any age, size, sex, or breed choose this place to plop as a result of their desire to remain close to their new owners.
Dogs may pick up on their owners’ emotions, particularly when they’re depressed or unwell. When several dogs live together, they compete to occupy the spot closest to the owner. Sitting down and bending your legs are helpful in offering comfort and support.
Dogs might even give you a sneaky, “aren’t I adorable?” expression while using you as a footstool. This endeavour to connect frequently results in their receiving more conversation and caressing, especially ear rubs. Due to this attention, they are more likely to repeat the action in the future.
Warmth and Love
Pooches curl up on their owners’ cozy pajamas and slippers in cold or wet weather to get warm. According to Burch, the dog clings to you to remain warm. “There’s a fair probability that this conduct was innate when they were pups.”
They frequently cuddle up if you’ve seen a litter of pups napping. They are not only kept warm in this position, but they also feel secure in it. Other dogs like to sit on their owners’ feet so they can swiftly follow them if they move because they want to be as near to their owners as possible.
Anxiety, safety, and protection
Anxious or stressed-out dogs may struggle in new environments or circumstances. They feel more secure when they’re around you. If your dog seldom chooses to land on your toes at home but does so abruptly, attempt to identify what could be frightening your dog.
Keep an eye out for these signals of fear in your dog’s body language:
tail firmly tucked between the legs or beneath the torso.
Separation anxiety may cause someone to sit and look for confirmation. Pooches can be scared by loud, strange, or unexpected noises like fireworks, thunder, construction noises, or arguments between people. A dog knows its owner has its back when they remain nearby. You could see a pooch resting on its owner’s feet at a dog park, adds Dr Burch. “This defends the owner or tells other pooches, ‘This is my person,'” the author said.
A pooch may hug your legs and bury its head in your feet if it feels scared or worried on certain occasions, such as while going to the vet. At most veterinary appointments, the same situation occurs again. Sarge, my Welsh Springer Spaniel, was a wonderful pooch who was obedient and well-trained, but Dr. Burch recalls that whenever Sarge had to visit the vet for a checkup, he would get nervous. He would paw at my feet with his front paws as he sat between my knees, panting and shedding. Then he would back up. It wouldn’t take long for the panting to stop.
How do you get a pooch to stop flopping over a person’s lower body and not move? The moment the word “treat” is said, there is no longer an issue. Your dog will immediately get up from your lap.
