What you need to know to make your best decision!
Pet insurance may save you hundreds of dollars in vet fees if your pet is injured or unwell. However, deciding on a strategy might be difficult. “There are numerous nuanced variations in terms of what’s covered, just as there are with any other sort of insurance,” adds the author “Denise Petryk, DVM, an on-staff veterinarian at Trupanion, a pet insurance provider, agrees. So before you make a purchase, think about the following points.
1. The breed and heredity of your pet
“You want a strategy that doesn’t exclude predisposing or genetic problems if you own a breed like a bulldog,” says Grace Anne Mengel, VMD, staff veterinarian at Penn Vet, the University of Pennsylvania’s department of veterinary medicine. Certain breeds may also be subject to higher rates under certain insurance policies.
2. Her age is number two.
Although new dogs may come with higher costs, insurance for younger animals is often less expensive since they have fewer health issues. So are you thinking about getting insurance for your, ahem, adult puppy? “Because older pets are more likely to have pre-existing diseases that aren’t covered by insurance,” adds Dr Petryk, “you should consider how this may influence your cost-benefit analysis of pet insurance.”
3. How do you plan to budget your expenses?
Accident and illness insurance will cover those unexpected large expenditures. However, some people may find it beneficial to have a wellness plan that includes yearly exams and routine visits. And allows you to pay over time rather than in one single fee every visit; do the math to ensure the prices are reasonable.
4. The kinds of treatments you’d like to get
Check whether your insurance covers alternative therapies such as acupuncture and hydrotherapy. Don’t forget to take care of your teeth! Make sure you understand what isn’t included.
5. Your timetable and way of living
Wellness programmes may restrict the number of times your pet may come in for routine appointments in some instances (only during weekday office hours, say). “Take a thorough look at the strategy if you have an irregular work schedule,” Dr Petryk says.
